Frequently Asked Questions

Why do these tinctures contain alcohol?

all concentrated herbal extracts require a "pulling" and "holding" method. alcohol is, by far, the best at pulling and holding high concentration of active compounds in solution. some companies use hot water for extraction then use glycerin to hold plant material in suspension, but this is not the best method for potency and retaining the most active compounds. high heat extracts degrade more fragile compounds which results in a less full-spectrum extraction. alcohol is not a therapeutic ingredient, but it's the ingredient that allows for higher therapeutic content / potential. additionally, a good quality organic alcohol is the cleanest extraction. other methods leave behind trace amount of toxic solvents in the final product. good organic cane alcohol is not cheap, so we don't put it in there for no reason.

will i build tolerance to these tinctures that would require higher serving sizes?

No. Roots Apothecary products do not interact with pathways / feedback loops that would negatively impact baseline neurochemistry (like traditional stimulants or direct hormone or dopamine modulators would). instead, roots products work with your mind-body systems to allow a natural (endogenous) calibrating of stress pathways, immune system, inflammation pathways and neurochemistry. by helping systems operate "as they should", the mind-body starts to bring itself to a place of balance. this is when real progress happens.

that being said, there is no such thing as infinite increasing benefit. in the beginning, progress will be quicker and more noticeable. eventually the rate of improvement will level out. as you get closer to balance, the rate of progress will slow down. this does not mean the product stopped working and you should increase serving size. a leveling of progress rate is 100% expected. the longer you can hold systems in a place of balance, the better they will perform.

for example, during the first month of consistent routine with the anxiety tincture, you may notice a relaxing of mental and physical tension. as the nervous system approaches a place of balance (sympathetic - parasympathetic balance) you may notice your thoughts and energy begin to smooth out. you may notice stronger executive functioning and better organization. you may notice social interactions aren't so anxiety inducing. you may notice improved confidence and better sleep patterns. all of these improvements will be more noticeable in the first few months of the routine. as balance is established, you cant expect the same rate of change. infinite improvement means you would start to operate outside of the furthest limitations of the mind-body. you would no longer be human. as these improvements become a part of your daily experience, you normalize them as your new operating state. this is when you may think "the anxiety tincture isn't working as good as it was in the beginning". instead, the anxiety tincture is now working to maintain the improvements it helped establish. if you feel like the tinctures is not longer working, we encourage you to cycle off the product. 1 of 2 things will happen. your nervous system will continue to operate a place of balance and resilience because that the anxiety tincture helped establish (awesome news), or the nervous system will begin to elevate again and the discomforts of high tension stress will creep back in (re-introduce anxiety tincture to your routine).

a good analogy here is exersize. if you're someone who picks up running for mental and physical health, you will notice a rapid rate of improvement during the first few months of a consistent routine. your soreness validates the work you're putting in. your sleep improves. you energy improves, your endurance improves, your mood improves, etc. as you build strength in your legs and your cardio, you will start to "plateau". the same effort results in less improvement. a consistent routine will be more about maintaining the improvements that regular exercise have given you. a plateau doesn't mean that running isn't working for you anymore and it doesn't mean that you need to push past the plateau (unless you're competing). even if you're trying to push yourself to the limit (not necessary to experience the benefits of exercise), incremental progress will be more and more elusive. this can be a challenging concept to understand, but it's important to long term mental and physical health and success.
